“It’s a Fabulous World” is a quirky and affecting documentary film about the business of ballroom dancing in the United States.
After two years of work, the film premiered, December 8, 2018, at the Saturday evening session of the Holiday Dance Classic Dancesport Competition in Las Vegas. The showing was made possible through the generous support of the Holiday Dance Classic organizers.
The idea for the film originated with a Russian filmmaker, Eldar Asanov, who, while on a trip to study in the United States, befriended two professional ballroom dancers, Yakiv Myronyuk and Vitaly Novikov. Yakiv and Vitaly were working as teaching pros and introduced Eldar to the obscure world of Pro/Am Dancesport – a sport which gets little media attention despite the broad popular appeal of TV shows such as “Dancing with the Stars”. Few people know that every weekend, at approximately ninety-six venues nationwide, amateur dancers and their professional partners compete in every ballroom genre from waltz to cha cha cha. Eldar casts his lens on this world and gives us a peek inside the business of ballroom dancing. Yakiv and Vitaly took Eldar on a journey through the pro/am dancesport circuit, beginning with a Halloween themed event in Connecticut. As they became engrossed with his subjects and the denizens of the sport, they simultaneously had to grapple with the challenges of raising the money needed to fund their new ambition – to make, in their words, the “first” documentary focused on the ballroom industry.
In the film, Eldar, Yakiv and Vitaly transport us through a universe populated by dancing lawyers, brokers, TV personalities and even Arnold Schwarzenegger! The three traveling companions and co-producers encounter some of the biggest legends in the business who freely provide advice and encouragement to the documentarians. Despite the project’s popularity in the ballroom community, funding remained scarce. There were some anxious moments after a crowdfunding effort failed. Yakiv is forced to sell most of his earthly possessions in order to keep producing the film. As a world champion dancer alluded to the challenges of pursuing an art form, “There will be interesting moments, ups and downs and that is the beauty of it. It is never just perfect…”. And those challenges remain.
Eldar and his co-producers are reaching out to the broader public in an effort to cover the costs associated with the project such as obtaining the rights to use copyrighted music in their film. But their goal remains the same: to give everyone the opportunity to watch this absorbing film about the fabulous world of ballroom dance.
